The trophy shown opposite was of Silver Gilt with height 12 inches and was contested at Northampton on 10th September 1828. The event was The Gold Cup of 100 Guineas over 3 miles and was won by the 3 year old chestnut colt Oppidan owned by Mr Payne who beat his sole rival Maresfield owned by Lord Mountcharles. The next day Oppidan was ridden by R Stephenson to win the Five Sovereigns Sweepstake over once round and the distance beating 2 others. |

The Silver Gilt trophy shown opposite had a height of 15 ½ inches and was contested at Northampton on Wednesday 24th August 1836. The 2 day meeting had 3 races on the card each day, including the Royal Plate of 100 Guineas, but this trophy was presented to the winner of the Yeomanry Cup over once round. It was won by an unnamed 5 year old bay gelding owned by Mr Fletcher, beating two others in the minimum of two heats. |

James Whyte’s History of the British Turf notes that Northampton racecourse was oval and a mile and a half in circumference, with a strong hill after 6 furlongs but a straight run in for the final 4 furlongs. Whyte records the August 1839 races as:- |
